Robert Newton

... first played Long John Silver in Disney's version of Treasure Island (1950). He reprised the role in Long John Silver, a.k.a. Long John Silver's Return to Treasure Island (1954), and again in its spin–off television series The Adventures of Long John Silver – broadcast by ITV in 1958.

Both films, and the television series, were directed by Byron Haskin – best known, according to Wikipedia, for the 1953 film version of H. G. Wells's War of the Worlds. The second film, and the TV series, were produced by a company specially formed for this purpose – registered in Australia and named Treasure Island Pictures Pty. Ltd.

The 1954 Long John Silver film should not be confused with Return to Treasure Island, released in the same year, which starred Tab Hunter and Dawn Addams. This was about adventurers from the time of the film's release exploring the desert island from Robert Louis Stevenson's story (which is treated as historical fact).
